of Montreal-Skeletal Lamping Review

Posted in Uncategorized on August 28, 2008 by Aaron Garretson

These ass holes did it again. They managed to follow up the masterpiece Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? with a quirky, trippy hodgepodge of sexual freak funk you’re ever likely to hear. The record isn’t perfect. That much is true. But it’s damn near. Hit the jump for the full review.

Skeletal Lamping Review

Posted in Uncategorized on August 27, 2008 by Aaron Garretson

Today/tomorrow I will be reviewing Skeletal Lamping, the new LP by one of my current favorite bands of Montreal. This is one of the albums I teased a few posts ago. I have not yet written the reviews to their entire back catalogue like I had intended, so those will be coming over the next few weeks, as the album doesn’t technically drop until October. This is absolutely my most anticipated album of the year, and I can’t wait to hear what new direction Kevin Barnes is taking the group. I will have you know that I’m keeping my hyperbole in check, just in case it turns out to be a mess. Although, I highly doubt it.

2 Guys 1 Podcast Episode 1

Posted in Uncategorized on August 27, 2008 by Aaron Garretson

This is the inaugural podcast featuring two really awesome guys talking about shit no one cares about. In this episode we discuss the new Slipknot album, what we’ve been playing, casual vs. hardcore, our Top 5 Downloadable Games, and our retro section featuring Metroid. I appologize for the lack of audio quality. We’re new to this. So shut up. Bitches. I didn’t mean that.

Here’s the download link just in case you want to listen to us complain about Metroid while you’re on the subway watching old people make out with each other.

Podcast

Posted in Uncategorized on August 24, 2008 by Aaron Garretson

So, Zombiebait and I actually got around to recording a podcast, dubbed 2 Guys 1 Podcast. Yeah! I know! I actually did something when I said I would! Anyway, I had a blast recording it, and would LOVE to do it every week, which is our goal. It’s, of course, not a high production podcast, but rather two nerds sitting around and discussing nerdy things. If that type of thing interests you, please listen to us every week. I hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording it. We tend to go off into tangents every once in awhile, but it’s all in good fun. We’re looking into beefing up the production in the coming weeks, as this is merely a trial run. If you listen, please provide constructive criticism or comments, as to improve the show altogether. It should go live tomorrow or Monday. Thank you.

My Extended Absence

Posted in Ambitions, Musings, Podcast, Progressive Nostalgia, WTF on August 21, 2008 by Aaron Garretson

It’s fucking difficult to get on the goddamn computer here when you have three additional people vying for time with the lucious internets. So, there won’t be a whole lot of updates, which anyone who reads this site, all three of you, are more than likely used to by now.

Here’s what’s on the slate for the coming weeks/months. There are three high profile releases coming out in September/October that I’ll be reviewing along with their entire back catalogue. Who? Just wait. Hopefully, I can review them before they hit the streets. That was a hint. Or was it? Just kidding.

That little project I mentioned awhile ago is a no go….FOR NOW! I am, of course, speaking of the Flaming Lips project I have taken upon calling Project Zaireeka: An Experiment In Aural Experimentation, Punctuated by Progressive Nostalgia. I know, it’s a mouthful, but I’m a sucker for long titles. :P

I’d still like to get a podcast off the ground, but lack the company that would make it work. No one wants to listen to one dude talk about media for an hour. I have talked to someone about it vaguely, but our schedules conflict and it would be nigh impossible to update it weekly, seeing as we are both lazy. This individual would make the perfect podcast companion, considering we occasionally butt heads. Should make for entertaining stuff. I’ve also got some awesome weekly/monthly features in mind that would definitely set us apart from the competion (read: EVERYONE!)

Anyone see that trailer for the Wii exclusive title The House of the Dead: Overkill? I’m buying it based on that trailer alone. For reals.

Any who, I apologize for my extended absence and hope to bring some more content to my corner of the web in the coming days. If only I could take command of the computer. Hmmmmm……

Progressive Nostalgia

Posted in Musings, Progressive Nostalgia, Random Topic on July 6, 2008 by Aaron Garretson

Our culture seems to be thriving on nostalgia, as of late. Simple evidence can be found everywhere, especially in the media I cover here at Cesaria. Movies, television, music, and games seem to be hearkening back to a, conceivably, better day. Why exactly is that? Frankly, I don’t know. Is it to capitalize on the trends of our youth, as the recent 80’s franchise film revivals seem to imply? If that is so, then it’s a purely lazy way to make a quick buck. But, there is another form of nostalgia that I’ve coined ‘progressive nostalgia,’ which is of course the counter to ‘regressive nostalgia,’ that seems to have emerged. Read more »

Wall-E Review

Posted in Film, Pixar, Reviews on June 29, 2008 by Aaron Garretson

Wall-E, big pimpinI don’t know what I can really add to the already heaping praise, but I will say that Wall-E is a flat out masterpiece. One of the more poignant sci-fi movies to come out in a long time. And it’s a fucking children’s movie!(?) I don’t want to go into detail on the plot, because this thing is much better going into it without knowing anything. All you need to know is that Wall-E is a robot and he falls in love with another robot, EVE, and that’s where the film truly shines. Read more »

Portishead-Third Review

Posted in Music, Reviews on June 21, 2008 by Aaron Garretson

It\'s aight.

No set up is really necessary here. I’m sure everyone already knows the story of this latest album from trip-hoppers Portishead. The only thing I will say is that it’s been eleven years since their self-titled sophomore effort, and the wait has been well worth it. It’s almost impossible to really go into great depth of each track, as I usually like to do, as it would take me three paragraphs to dissect every one, but instead I’ll highlight a few of my favorites, out of many. [rec] Review

Posted in Film, Reviews on June 18, 2008 by Aaron Garretson

P

[rec] is a very interesting film. It’s a spanish language horror film, filmed with handy cam, and takes on the not-zombies genre. I know, it sounds lame/cliche , but it is very well done. In fact, as I sat through it, I was looking for moments that didn’t make any sense, and I can’t really recall any. Quite unheard of. Now, this review may contain some spoilers for those of you who want to go in knowing nothing, like I did, and I highly recommend it. So, skip over the next paragraph if you really want to stay spoiler-free. Read more »

A Cesarian Guide Volume 1: How to Be A Pretentious Indie Kid

Posted in A Cesarian Guide, Music, Random Topic on June 16, 2008 by Aaron Garretson

Hey! Here’s a new little column I have come up with. It’s a guide on how to be yourself, in case you didn’t know already. This will more than likely be a monthly thing, as is the case with my Things That Piss Me Off series, which will be making the jump from myspace to my little corner of the web, Cesaria. The site you’re currently reading. These columns are a satirical way to set myself apart from the competition (read: every other fucking site on the webs.) Okay, let’s begin: Read more »
